One of the flaws of our current setup is that nine times out of ten by the time I get home from work at night the kids are already in bed. If David isn’t asleep then he’s usually too tired to be anything nearing pleasant with me and the experience of wishing him goodnight becomes a bit of an ordeal. Every now and then though I am blessed with the sounds of Iona shouting “hiya” the minute she hears the door open and David is awake enough to be read a bedtime story to without having to argue with him about why he should lie down and go to sleep when we’re finished.
Last night was one such night.
I read David “Ten in the Bed” last night (his choice) which should really be sung but I refuse to sing a bedtime story (too energetic to wind down to) so I read the words instead. He loved it! He hung on my every word waiting to find out which animal was going to “fall” out of bed next and what noise they would make when that happened. He then of course repeated the sound. Brilliant! These moments are priceless and are sadly few and far between.
This weekend I’m going to be away all weekend with Iona so won’t get to spend that precious two days with him. He’s being surprisingly grown up about it but this might be because he’s realised that if Iona isn’t around he’ll be the centre of attention again and will be able to make noise all day without being told to be quiet while his sister sleeps. He’ll be in small child heaven!

Have a fab weekend with Iona.
Does that mean it’s a boys weekend for Alisdair and David?
Be interesting to hear what you all get up to.
Hi Jo,
The reason for our trip away was that my gran has been ill and since she lives 4 hours away we spent the weekend there.
Iona got up to what you would expect a typical one year old with separation anxiety might get up to. She was in strange houses with strange people and was scared most of the time and frankly just wanted her daddy. She spent all weekend clinging onto me so I spent all weekend holding onto her to reassure her that great granny nellie wasn’t a monster.
The boys got up to all sorts of fun things and by all accounts didn’t really miss us that much (I bet Alasdair will protest otherwise though).
I will probably post about it later since it is sort of newsworthy…if only to comment on the fact that I’m still hungover two days after drinking three glasses of wine…I’m a bit of a halfweight!
